What does Casa Carey do?

Beach Patrol

During Turtle nesting season volunteers working for Casa Carey walk alongside beaches searching for turtle nests.

Beach Cleanup

The Casa Carey program cleans the beaches in the Padre Ramos Natural Reserve in Nicaragua.

Turtle Research

Casa Carey volunteers and staff go out in motorized boats to do in water surveys and catch turtles to tag them and collect data.

Replanting Mangrove

Mangrove forests are vital for the environment that supports Hawksbill turtles. Casa Carrey has taken the initiative to try to replant these dwindling forests.

Hatchery Monitoring

Of the turtle nests found, they are brought to a Hatcher till they hatch. Once they hatch, they are released back into the wild.

Community Building

Casa Carrey is trying to combat the root of the problem by talking to schools and people in the community about the environment and the costs of losing it.

Join the Movement!

Casa Carey is located in the Padre Ramos reserve in Nicaragua. Its mission is to save the critically endangered turtle species, the Hawksbill turtle. Casa Carey has built its organization within the communities of the Padre Ramos reserve and is looking for volunteers to come help the conservation effort.

What to expect

Volunteers of Casa Carey are going to be in the thick of the conservation efforts. This includes the tasks mentioned above, like night patrols and turtle tagging, that can be physically requiring. This is all worth it to see Hawksbill turtles firsthand by releasing the babies, coming across a laying mother on the beach, or capturing to tag an older turtle on the water.

When you're not doing night patrols or working towards the conservation effort time will be spent at the home of Casa Carey. This house is surrounded by beautiful mangrove forests, a stunning ocean, and plentiful wildlife and fauna that are regularly seen like birds and fish.

The home of Casa Carey is vibrant with other volunteers and the locals who have devoted their lives to this conservation effort. It's an eye-opening experience to see how humans are working together to make a future where animals and us can live together. The Casa Carey program is on the frontlines to save the critically endangered Hawkbill Turtle. To see more check out Casa Carrey's Instagram @cooperativa_casacarey.

What does your help do

Volunteers are doing the work that is necessary for the conservation efforts. One more person searching for laying turtles or helping release newly hatched ones betters the odds of preserving the critically endangered species of Hawksbill turtle. In this day and age where so many species are critically endangered it is so important to maintain our world's biodiversity that allows us to keep our hope that someday it can return to its previous state.
